US doctor Mehmet Oz has announced his bid for the Senate seat vacated by Republican Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania.
The health expert, best known for promoting healthy eating on his TV show Dr Oz, says he has not ruled out a run for president in four years’ time.
Mr Toomey shocked many when he said he would not seek re-election, thereby paving the way for a Democratic majority in the Senate.
The top Democrat leader in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is also seeking to win the seat.
Oz also launched a television channel and a motivational website in response to pressure from Washington politicians that his TV shows promote unnecessary, high cost diet and weight loss products.
He says he is being punished for advocating such programs – he has since dropped the products from his show.
For his campaign to win, he will face state Treasurer Joe Torsella, who is running unopposed.
Oz, 55, is regarded as a celebrity in America for his appearance on shows like The Dr. Oz Show and Weight Watchers.
